A Few Things You May Not Know About Tax Codes

The whole process of calculating one's tax obligations in the UK largely depends on the tax codes. Normally, people are given the common tax codes such as the ones that are made up of numerals and then are followed by a letter. Although this is a rather common situation, the truth of the matter is that there are many other codes that are not as common, but which do have a large impact on the kind of business that you will be doing. In this article, we are going to look at some of these codes and how you can make sure that you understand them well

The BR Code

This code is also referred to as the Basic Rate code. As the name suggests, this taxcode is based on the fact that the tax payer pays taxes based on a fixed ate of 20% on all the income. This does not take into account the personal allowance at all. For example, if at all you were earning say, 100,000 pounds in a year, you will be required to pay 20,000 pounds in form of taxes. Normally, this particular code is given o people who are having two jobs, where all the basic tax-free allowances has been covered by the first job, or where you do not have in your possession the form P45, and you haven't filled and submitted the form P46.

D0

This particular tax rate is used when taxing the income of people who are being taxed at the rate of 40%.  This is the higher figure is used for people who are earning more.

D1

If the rate that is being used to determine your obligations to the HMRC is 50%, then this is the code that will be allocated to you.

NT

When you get the NT code, then it means that no money is being taken away from your income at all.

One thing that you need to have in your mind very clearly is the fact that the codes are extremely important if at all you really want to understand the issues that are being talked about here. Without properly understanding the code, you may not be able to know how the figures that you are paying were actually arrived at. On the other hand, if you do know a lot about the codes, then it is very unlikely for you to end up getting confused about it.
