How to Do Free-Motion Monogramming With a Brother Sewing Machine
- 1). Drop the feed dogs on your Brother sewing machine, consulting your manual if necessary. Install the free-motion embroidery foot and thread your sewing machine. Set the stitch length to zero and your stitch width to a very narrow zig zag. Increase the tension slightly.
- 2). Draw a monogram on your fabric with a disappearing fabric marker. Use a stencil or trace a printed letter or letters if you prefer.
- 3). Spray tear away stabilizer with temporary adhesive spray. Secure the stabilizer to the wrong side of the practice fabric. Place your fabric into the embroidery hoop with the stabilizer side facing up.
- 4). Raise the presser foot, then slide the embroidery hoop with the right side of the fabric facing up and the hoop itself upside down onto the bed of the sewing machine.
- 5). Make several stitches in one area to lock your stitching into place. Moving slowly, stitch the outline of your letter with a narrow zig zag stitch. Complete the letter, then make several stitches in one spot to secure the threads. Trim the ends closely.
- 6). Set your Brother sewing machine to a wide zigzag stitch, 3.0 to 5.0 millimeters. Stitch neatly and slowly, covering the original outline with a wide, even satin stitch.
