Family outings are a great opportunity to get your dog out of the house.
It is a wonderful way to exercise your dog while socializing him and building the bond between him and the family.
Of course your dog needs to have basic obedience, this will help ensure he is on his best behavior.
Though as you take your dog out the first few times don't be surprised if he has a hard time listening to the commands you give him.
As you take him out more often the novelty of new places and getting away from the house will wear off, and he will be better able to generalize the commands you give him.
What that means is he will know that sit means sit whether he is at home, the park, or a friends house.
So don't hesitate take your family out to places your dog can enjoy too! Hiking is an excellent activity that the whole family can enjoy.
Not to mention it is a wonderful form of exercise for both your family and your dog.
It is also a chance to let your dog off leash, if he has a solid recall.
If his recall isn't reliable then it is best to keep your dog on leash.
There are many forms of wildlife out on the trails and it can be hard for a dog to control his impulses.
If your dog takes off after a rabbit it may not be such a big deal, but if he chases a porcupine it can mean a trip to the vet.
Even if your dog needs to stay on leash, he will still benefit from hitting the trail.
A day at the beach is another way to include the dog.
There are many dog friendly beaches out there and even some that allow your four-legged friend to be off leash.
Swimming is also a great way to exercise an older dog, as it doesn't put pressure on the joints.
However, not all dogs enjoy water and not every dog can swim.
Even so these dogs can enjoy a romp in the sand and maybe they can be entertained with a game of fetch from a human member of the family that doesn't enjoy swimming either! Family barbecues are yet another option.
There are many different locations in which they can be held.
No matter where it is held, it is extremely important that your dog listens well in these situations.
No one wants a dog around that tries to steal food or is otherwise a nuisance.
If your dog does well then this is a great chance to let him run around and play.
Many times there will be plenty of kids and other dogs to keep your dog entertained.
If It is being held at a park make sure your dog is allowed to be off leash.
If it is held at a family member's house be sure to ask if your dog is welcome to come along.
Another option is to host.
While your dog isn't getting out in this case, it is still a great way to socialize him.
Be sure to tell everyone invited that their dogs are welcome as well! Camping is a great overnight option to involve your dog.
This is a wonderful way to really expand your dog's experience level.
Not only are they playing in a new environment, but getting them to sleep in a new environment will increase their ability to accept any new situation.
After all they need to feel comfortable in order relax enough to sleep.
At first don't be surprised if your dog is restless and won't lay down to sleep.
After a couple of nights your dog should be tired and have adjusted enough to sleep without a problem.
And of course the more often you take you dog camping the more comfortable he will be.
So next time you are planning a day with the family be sure to consider these and other options to include your dog.
Even vacations can be a great opportunity to take the dog along! This not only improves your dogs manners, but the bond between the family and the dog is sure to grow.
Anytime you take your dog along be sure you bring water in case your dog gets thirsty, and never leave your dog in a hot car.
Also always bring a leash.
Even if your dog isn't going to be on it, it is always a good idea to have a leash as a back up.
This is especially true as you first start taking your dog along.
Situations can easily arise where a leash is necessary.
So don't hesitate get your dog involved today.
