    • 1). Put the Windows XP disc into your computer's optical drive. Click "Install Windows XP" when the disc auto-runs the installer. Choose "Upgrade."

    • 2). Scroll through the license agreement that appears on the screen. Press the "F8" key if you agree to the terms in the agreement. Type the product key from your Windows XP disc package. Click "Next."

    • 3). Choose whether or not to convert your hard drive's file system to NTFS. If you switch to NTFS and later want to use Windows 98 again, you will have to completely reformat your drive. Click "Next."

    • 4). Click "Next." Download updates if you have an Internet connection. Click "Next." Wait for Windows to restart your computer twice. Once setup has completed, the Windows XP installation disc boots you into the operating system.
