How to Manually Clean Registry Files

    • 1). Create a backup of your registry files, so if you mess up while cleaning the registry you can start over. Open the "Start" menu located that the bottom, left side of the screen.

    • 2). Click "Run" to bring up another command box. In that box type "Regedit" and click "OK."

    • 3). A new window appears which is the registry editor. At the top of the window click on "File," and then "Export." Type in the name of the file when the new box appears. Save it to a location that where it is easy to find like the desktop or even an external hard drive as an extra safety measure.

    • 4). Locate the registry directory located on the left side of the registry editor window. The directory appears as a series of folders with sub-folders inside. Click on the plus signs on the left of the folders to expand them and look at their contents. To delete folder contents simply highlight it and press "Delete" on your keyboard or click on "File" and then "Delete."

    • 5). Clean the registry with registry cleaning software if you are unsure of what you are doing.

    Mac

    • 1). Run a registry cleanup if you want to make sure the files are clean. To do this look in Finder which looks is the icon that looks like a square face.

    • 2). Open your hard disk and click on "Applications." Look for the file folder called "Utilities" and click to open it.

    • 3). Click on "Disk Utility" then double-click it to run the application. This application has the same function as the disk defragmenter in Windows.
