How to Install Wood Deck Railings
- 1). Measure and cut two 2 by 4s to 34 1/2 inches long. Use a tape measure and a miter saw.
- 2). Place one of the cut boards against each of the posts. Measure the distance between the two posts at the top of each board. This is the length the rail must be cut to. Use a miter saw to cut the 2-by-4 to length.
- 3). Set the best side of the railing face down and add two pocket screw holes to each end of the railing. Pull the pocket screw in 3/4 inch from each side. This will keep the railing from splintering. Adjust the pocket screw jig so that the head of the screw is set just below the surface of the railing.
- 4). Repeat steps 2 through 3 for the remaining post and add the railings.
