How to Automatically Backup Photos and Videos from Dropbox on iOS
One of the easiest ways to make sure you never lose a photo or video you take with your iPhone or iPad is to use Dropbox. The online storage and file syncing app has a feature called Camera Upload that automatically saves photos and videos from your mobile device to your Dropbox folder, keeping your photos and videos safe both stored in the cloud and synced with your computer. Here's how to use Camera Upload with the iOS app.
- First, you'll need to download or have installed the latest Dropbox app for iOS. Download it from the iTunes App Store.
- If you're using the app for the first time, when you first open the app, Dropbox will ask you to choose your Camera Upload settings--whether to enable it or not and if you want Dropbox to upload only over Wi-Fi and/or over 4G/mobile data. Choose Wi-Fi only to save data minutes or include 4G if you want to upload your photos and videos wherever you may be. If you already had the app installed, you'll find the Camera Upload options in the Dropbox app settings.
- Once you've enabled Camera Upload, Dropbox will automatically save photos and videos taken from you iPhone or iPad to a new "Camera Uploads" folder in Dropbox.
Some things to note about the Camera Upload feature:
- Normally, as with the Android Dropbox app, you'll need to open the Dropbox app every time you want to trigger Dropbox to start uploading any photos or videos you've taken since the last upload. However, the Android iOS app has a setting called "Background uploading," which, according to Dropbox "will automatically resume uploads whenever it detects a significant change in your iPhone's location"--finishing uploads without you having to open the app.
- Also, if you use Dropbox on a Mac, Dropbox now has a setting to import photos from iPhoto (e.g., on your iPhone or iPad) to Dropbox. It isn't automatic, but the utility makes it easier to backup iPhoto photos to Dropbox.
- Dropbox doesn't delete the photos or videos on your iPhone or iPad. They'll stay on your device until you delete them manually from your photo gallery. This won't remove the files from the Dropbox folder, however, so you can save space on your phone by manually deleting the photos and videos after Dropbox uploads them to your online account.
- After Camera Uploads does its magic, you can view your photos on Dropbox.com in the Photos page, in addition to seeing them in the Camera Uploads folder from your computer and other Dropbox-connected devices.
- Unfortunately, there's no setting to choose photos or videos. Dropbox Camera Upload will upload both.
- Keep an eye on your Dropbox storage space. You only get 2GB of space to start with, and if you use Dropbox to store lots of other files, this can get used up rather quickly. If you run out of space, there are several other options for automatically backing up your mobile photos and videos.
