Pregnancy Weight Loss - Is it Safe to Lose Weight During Pregnancy?

103 3
Losing weight is never an easy task.
However, if you are overweight when you become pregnant, your doctor may advise you to lose weight during your pregnancy.
This is a new approach to pregnancy; as recently as 20 years ago, it was recommended that even obese women gain some weight throughout the duration of carrying their child.
However, now physicians cite the health of both the mother and the baby as being the reasons behind recommended and closely supervised pregnancy weight loss.
Any weight loss you may be considering first needs to be thoroughly discussed with your obstetrician.
Not following your physician instructions can put both your health and that of your baby at risk.
There are, however, some common sense things that your doctor is likely to advise you to do while you are pregnant.
Some of these things will help make weight loss possible, if that is an agreed goal and one which your OB has agreed to.
First, you need to exercise.
Research has shown that regular, moderate exercise, such as walking or swimming, can be of benefit to both the mother and the baby.
Not only will you feel better and healthier throughout the pregnancy, your baby is likely to be healthier as well.
Second, you need to eat a proper, healthy diet.
Yes, you are now eating for two, but do not use that as an excuse to binge.
Instead, talk with your doctor and develop a set diet plan that meets the needs of you and the baby.
Some doctors now believe that it is safe for a woman to lose weight during pregnancy.
However, before putting yourself on a diet or starting an exercise regimen, you should discuss the topic with your OB and get their blessing; you need to be looking out for your health and that of your child.
