History

• The Lake Buena Vista Village shopping complex opened in 1975. At the time, it housed a small collection of restaurants and shops along the lakefront. The area underwent several updates and name changes, but remained Walt Disney World's only evening entertainment option for the next 14 years. Pleasure Island opened in 1989 as a separately gated collection of nightclubs. In 1997, Downtown Disney West Side opened as a trendier and more upscale addition to the complex, and the entire area was renamed Downtown Disney. The Pleasure Island 24 opened as part of this addition.
  
  

Future Plans

• As of 2011, Pleasure Island's nightclubs are closed and the area is undergoing major redevelopment. Pleasure Island will be entirely re-themed as Hyperion Wharf, an early 20th century warehouse district offering dining, shopping and entertainment experiences for all ages. The movie theater will remain, but plans call for it to be renamed the AMC Downtown Disney 20. Therefore, it appears that the theater will be remodeled and lose four of its current screens. It is also projected to become Florida's first Fork and Screen Theater, with restaurant-style dining service.
  
  

Experience

• The Pleasure Island 24 is one of AMC's most modern and elaborate movie theaters. The theater features stadium seating, THX Surround Sound and Sony Dolby Dynamic Sound. The building is themed as a 1920s Art Deco movie palace.
  
  Since the theater is near the center of Downtown Disney, many people choose to make an evening out of the experience. Wolfgang Puck's, Bongo's Cuban Café and Planet Hollywood are just a few of the dining options available steps from the theater.
  
  

AMC ETX

• The Pleasure Island 24 was the first theater in the United States to receive AMC's Enhanced Theater Experience, known as ETX. The ETX retrofit includes a digital projection system with higher resolution than HD, 12 audio channels with 50,000 watts of power, 3D technology and a screen that is 20 percent larger than industry standard. As of 2011, one auditorium in the Pleasure Island 24 offers ETX, with tickets priced slightly higher than regular theater tickets.
