7 snackfoods you can eat without ruining your diet
Fortunately there are several snackfoods you can eat without ruining your diet - let's face it, we all love to snack from time to time.
First on the list are oranges. Eating an orange is a lot better than drinking orange juice, since you are also taking in the bulk of the fruit which will tend to make you feel more full. There are also other fruits you might like, such as bananas - which are also a great source of potassium - and pears.
Next up, believe it or not, peanuts. NOT salted peanuts - the plain unsalted ones. Technically, the peanut is not actually a nut, but it IS full of fibre and protein. It also contains significant amounts of iron, zinc and magnesium. The high iron and protein content makes it a good substitute for red meat if you happen to be vegetarian.
Popcorn. This is low in sugar and low in fat, but is quite high in fibre. However, if you buy it from the shops, it can contain amounts of sugar, butter and salt which you might wish to avoid. The solution is to make your own. Amazon sell a popcorn maker for about $30, which could be an investment if you like popcorn.
Next up is porridge oats which are high in fibre and also provide carbohydrates. You can add berry fruits, such as raspberries - which I love - blackberries, strawberries and so on. Personally, I like my oats sweet, so I cheat and use honey, but you should really use artificial sweeteners.
Next, don't forget salads. If you're feeling lazy you can buy salads pre-prepared in supermarkets but for the small amount of effort it takes I prefer to make my own.
Some lettuce, a tomato, cucumber, sweet peppers - maybe a few radishes - and you have a salad. It will be a lot cheaper and you'll have plenty left over to make another the following day. You can also add eggs, cheese (low-fat) or lean meat - chicken or pork.
Next, what about a fruit salad? Again, you can buy them from the stores, but they are simple to make yourself. Berry fruits, apples, bananas, pears, maybe something more exotic like mango or lychees - and you'll still have some left for tomorrow.
Finally, for a special treat, what about an avocado pear?
Avocados are rich in potassium, vitamin A, vitamin E and also contain mono-unsaturated fat and vitamin B6. Note, however, that they are relatively high in calories, so should be eaten in moderation.
Hopefully, this will have given you some ideas for things you can eat to give yourself that little treat without ruining your diet.
