Tubal ligation is considered to be one of the safest forms of contraceptive for women.
It definitely has some great advantages, but there are also a few risks involved.
Find out more about it to make a well informed decision.
Methods Some surgeons use different methods when they are doing a tubal ligation.
Some surgeons will cut the tubes and then cauterize them.
Other surgeons may prefer to tie the tubes.
The first method is definitely more effective, but also irreversible.
Most of the time, women that get a tubal ligation will stay in the hospital for at least 8 hours.
The doctor will also ask you to come back in so that they can ensure that the procedure worked correctly.
The procedure is considered routine and the risk of complications is extremely low.
Pregnancy Chances Having your tubes tied is definitely considered to be one of the best forms of contraception, but if it isn't done right then it may not be as effective as you would like for it to be.
The odds of getting pregnant after a tubal ligation naturally are about one in 400.
This is not very high odds, but it is definitely possible.
Also, if a pregnancy were to occur it is very important that you be seen by a doctor as soon as possible to ensure that it is a healthy pregnancy.
Risks and Drawbacks The first big downfall is the fact that it is only reversible for a short period of time.
The second downfall is the fact that there are several possible complications involved, due to it being a surgical procedure.
Possibly one of the biggest downfalls is the fact that natural pregnancy afterwards is virtually impossible.
To get pregnant after tubal ligation can be quite costly.
There is a risk of ectopic pregnancy.
Ectopic pregnancies generally happen in only 2% of all pregnancies.
This is a pregnancy in which the fertilized egg implants in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus.
This is a very risky situation.
While the risk is usually small, it is higher in women that have had a tubal ligation reversal.
The Legal Aspects There are different laws on this procedure in the different states.
In most state, there is a minimum age limit for this contraceptive method.
Typically, the woman has to be at least 21 years of age, but sometimes this age limit is higher.
Some states require patients to wait at least thirty days before having a tubal ligation, simply because they want the woman to really think about what she is doing before she does it.
It is also possible for doctors to require the written permission of the legal partner of the women in order to perform the procedure.
Think things through before deciding on tubal ligation.
