How to Patch Concrete Stairs

    • 1). Make 1/2 inch-deep "shoulder" cuts around the damaged area with the masonry saw. Shoulder cuts should set up an outline of the damaged area.

    • 2). Hammer the chisel into weak and loose sections of the concrete to break it up, using the maul. Pick up and discard all loose pieces, using a broom or vacuum.

    • 3). Stir together the patching mix in a bucket, then wet down the area that needs to be patched with a wet sponge. Add the patch mix to the area with the wood float. Once applied, slide a board side from side to side to scrape off excess patching mix.

    • 4). Allow the patch mixture to set in. When you can press your thumb onto the surface without making an imprint, the mixture has set in properly.

    • 5). Rub the surface with the sponge float, and continue to smooth it over with the steel trowel to get the texture you want.

    • 6). Lay the plastic sheet over the entire area, and weigh it down so it won't blow away. The plastic sheet will allow moisture to gather over the patched area, which will ensure that it cures properly.
