Call of Duty Black Ops - The Dead Rise Again

With the release on February 1st 2011 of the new ‘first strike’ pack, gamers were given a brand new Zombie level Ascension to get to grips with.

The level is based around a rocket launch facility and the usual strategy applies. Gamers must survive endless waves of Zombie hordes and try to get to the highest level possible. At the time of writing, this is currently level 72 with 2 people. This sounds incredible when most gamers only reach level 30 or 40 with a group of 4 people.

The Zombies levels are all about team strategy. You must be in communication with each other at all times and that is why a headset is not essential but a necessity if one wants to reach high levels in the game. Of course, having good weapons like the ray gun or thundergun pretty much guarantees you to make it to higher levels. But again, gamers need to utilise the traps spotted around the level and the usual perks available as well as some new ones.

Priced at 1200 Microsoft points which equates to about £10, it does seem a little pricy for just 4 new multiplayer maps and one Zombie map. But I assure you, once you get involved with Zombie Ascension, you will have endless hours of fun and the fact that you paid so much for an expansion won’t worry you much anymore.

The dead have risen once more and it seems that there is nowhere left to hide for our intrepid gamers. This new map brings with it a new nemesis, the space monkeys and 2 more perks available to help players.

Stamina Up is a new perk that allows gamers to sprint for a longer period of time which is very handy in later levels when you need to run away from large groups of zombies.

PHD Flopper gives gamers the ability to create explosions when they dive down on the ground. Again, this is good at clearing a path for other people to run and get perks and weapons from the mystery box.
Hundreds of undead soldiers and scientists is the least of your problems when the space monkeys appear. From a distant planet or possibly forgotten from the various trips to the moon, the space monkeys are here for one purpose alone; to steal your perks!

Once a player purchases one of the five perks available, then the space monkeys come down from the heavens to steal them from you. They will run to whatever location of the perks that you have bought so you must protect them with your life!

If the monkeys are killed without them touching the perk machines then you are rewarded with a free random perk. This is a nice touch to save you a couple of thousand points to perhaps upgrade your weapon or purchase a weapon from one of the mystery boxes scattered around.
To pack-a-punch your weapon you must launch the rocket, and to do this you must activate the 3 lander positions around the maps. Once this has happened, the rocket can be fired and within the launch pad is the pack-a-punch machine.

Team work, pack-a-punch weapons and perks are the 3 main things that will keep you fighting on level after level to destroy the never ending hordes of ZOMBIES!

With the new Zombie map Ascension now in full swing after 2 weeks of being released, how can the average gamer survive to the higher rounds? Perks, traps and power-ups are all used to eliminate hordes of the undead from claiming your life. So what ones are there in the new map?

Perks
As well as the usual quick revive, juggernog and speed cola, the new perk ‘stamina up’ and ‘PHD flopper’ gives gamers a new way to stay alive

Traps
When these are activated they produce flames to burn the zombies and are great when you manage to gather large groups together. As well as this and not classified as a trap as such but the automatic machine gun helps mow down large groups of zombies when you need that extra little help.

Power-ups
• The ‘carpenter’ boards up all the windows automatically which stops zombies coming from behind you from those windows you don’t have time to board up. This is great in the later levels when you are concentrating on mowing down large groups of zombies.
• The ‘nuke’ destroys all zombies on the map instantly although in later levels when zombies take more hits to die, this will take longer.
• The ‘insta-kill’ gives gamers the ability to kill zombies with one hit so using a knife and conserving your ammo is great when you get this perk.
• ‘Max ammo’ as the name suggests refills all ammo clips for each player, so is good to reload first to get the maximum amount of bullets as possible.
• ‘Fire Sale’ spawns all of the mystery boxes in every location and each box costs only 10 points rather than the usual 950 points. This lasts about 20-30 seconds so you have to be quick to grab a cheap gun.
• The bottle’ perk only appears if you kill the space monkeys before they touch the perk machines and you are rewarded with a free perk. This is a nice touch especially in later rounds when having perks helps you even more.
• ‘Death machine’ gives the player that grabs it a mini-gun for 30 seconds and unlimited ammo. It is guaranteed to mow down endless numbers of zombies and is great for later rounds to get more points to pack-a-punch your weapons.
Then there is the Easter egg where a player dives on another player and they both are downed. This activates the ability to gain more power-ups to help you survive even more levels.
So with so many things at the gamers disposable, you can guarantee yourself to survive a lot of rounds and enjoy playing this new Zombie map Ascension!
Playing Zombies is a key feature of the Call of Duty franchise, so don’t miss out and go and download the expansion, you won’t regret it!
