THAILAND X GAMES CUP DEBUTS IN BANGKOK TODAY
Today at the Huamak Indoor Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, 14 of the best action sports athletes in the world kicked off the inaugural Thailand X Games Cup, to be held March 25-27. Through their performances on the Vert and Moto X ramps, the elite X Games athletes are showing support towards the Rajaprajanugroh Foundation, which comes under the patronage of Thailand?s Royal Family. More than 6200 spectators attended the event today to show their support for the cause and the world-class athletes.
Admission to the event is free.
In an effort to raise money and awareness towards the Rajaprajanugroh Foundation, together with ESPN Inc., ESPN STAR Sports, the athletes are joining together to donate a portion of the proceeds from the event. All contributions, including a portion of the athletes? appearance fees, will go towards the Foundation. Its? beneficiaries include children who were orphaned in the wake of the tsunami tragedy.
The weekend-long event will showcase several current and former X Games champions, including aggressive in-line skaters Fabiola da Silva (Brazil) and the Yasutoko Brothers (Japan) ; BMX riders Mat Hoffman (USA), Kevin Robinson (USA), Jamie Bestwick (U.K.) and Koji Kraft (USA) ; skateboarders Bob Burnquist (Brazil), Sandro Dias (Brazil), Pierre-Luc Gagnon (Canada) and Mathias Ringstrom (Sweden) ; moto X riders Justin Homan (USA), Derek Cook (USA) and Jesse Olsen (USA).
?Those in the action sports industry are very conscious people. They are more about giving to the community than receiving, and after the devastation in Thailand, we were ready to help any way that we could.
The Rajaprajanugroh Foundation seems like it is the most locally supported, so I am happy to contribute,? BMX legend Mat Hoffman said about his participation in the demo.
In addition to the planned demos, the Thai Extreme Association?s top 15 ranked athletes will compete in Bike Stunt Park, Aggressive In-line Skate Park and Skateboard Park. The top finisher in each discipline will receive an all-expense paid trip and invitation to compete in the Asian X Games 2005 presented by KIA in Seoul, South Korea from May 26 ? 29. Today the Skateboard Park final was held, and Bangkok?s own Werayut Eksirasuwan took gold and the invite to Korea in May.
The Thailand X Games Cup 2005 enjoys high-level sponsorship and organizational support from official host Tourism Authority of Thailand; Powered by True and Orange; Official Mobile Handset, Motorola; Official Automobile, KIA Motors, and Official Television platform UBC. Additional support comes from Siam Motor Sport and Sport Radio.
