Skin Rules, written by Debra Jaliman, MD, is a great little book that, as its subtitle declares, shares all the "trade secrets from a top New York dermatologist." Instead of chapters, this book gives 77 rules – things you can do to care for your skin. The topics run the gamut from daily skin care, to common skin problems, to Botox and fillers. It makes a nice skin care guide.

Pros:

  • Skin Rules is written in simple, easy to understand, no nonsense language.
  • It's an easy read.
  • The majority of the "skin rules" listed are simple, easy to incorporate into your daily routine, and give you a greater understanding of how to care for your skin.
  • No need to read cover to cover, just jump to the rules that interest you most (although you really should read through all the "rules" at least once.)

Cons:
  • You won't get much in-depth info on any one skin care subject.

Skin Rules Guide Review:

Skin Rules by Debra Jaliman, MD, is a small book. You won't find hundreds of pages and heavy chapters. What you will find is a lot of solid skin care information, all broken down into tiny bites that are easy to understand and easy to incorporate into your everyday skin care routine.

Skin Rules is unique because it doesn't have traditional chapters.

Instead, it is divided up into 77 "rules." Each rule takes up about one page, so you can read just a few at a time if you choose. You don't even have to read the rules in order. Flip to the ones that most interest you (do make sure to read all of the rules, though, or you'll miss some really good tips.)

And, the book is small and light enough that you can easily carry it in your bag. This is perfect because it's a great book to read when you're out and about, like waiting at the dentist office or for your kid's sports practice to finish. Because the rules are short and sweet, there's no need for tons of time to dig into a heavy chapter.

This is exactly how Dr. Jaliman planned it. During our interview, she told me "I feel like people are so busy, that many people don't want to read a whole, long book. A lot of the skin books out there, my eyes kind of glaze over when I go to read them. I wanted to write something that was quick, easy, accessible, but was based in fact. So everything in this book is really based on science or based on (my) 25 years of experience (in dermatology). I wanted… truth, fact, and (something that) would be helpful, but an easy read."

And Dr. Jaliman did just that. When I read the first rule – don't spend money on expensive cleansers – I knew I would like this book. It's no nonsense style appealed to me, and the info was presented in a way that made it easy to understand.

The rules are basically grouped together by topic. For instance, rules #1 through #6 talk about cleansing the skin. Rules #39 through #46 deal specifically with acne and its treatment. I like how both teen acne and adult acne is addressed. I love that lots of acne treatment options are discussed, from drugstore options like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, to prescription medications like topical retinoids, and even professional procedures like blue light therapy.

More than anything, though, I really appreciated the fact that the tips given were presented in such an honest fashion. There was no hype, no favoring one brand or treatment over another, and the limitations of each treatment were also disclosed. (Dr. Jaliman explains different treatment options for acne scars, for example, but makes clear that no procedure can erase them completely.)

If there was one drawback about the book, I would say it was that no topics were covered in-depth. The rules were great little snippets, but if you wanted to dig deeper you'll have to go somewhere else.

But Skin Rules is a great little skin care manual that gives you lots of balanced, easy to assimilate information about how to keep your skin running in tip-top shape.
