Are Bees the Solution to Canker Sores?
Could there be anything bees can't do?
They make honey, they build hives, they pollinate just about everything we eat, they make substances like royal jelly that supposedly has anti-aging properties. Could it be they can actually help ease the pain of canker sores?
Depending on some studies, a substance bees produce called Propolis is an extremely effective canker sore remedy.
According to people out there on the internet who supposedly know stuff like this, propolis is a waxy, resinous substance bees produce from flower buds and sap flows, and they use it while in the hive to fill in small gaps much like beeswax. In its natural state, propolis is brown in color, sticky, and quite smelly, so even though it has numerous medicinal uses, it hasn't been widely accepted for those reasons.
According to a story via the Health and Med Blog, and quoting a Professor Anant Paradkar that has researched propolis for years, €Propolis has been shown to be anti-microbial, anti-fungal, a strong anti-oxidant, non-allergenic and can boost the immune system. It also promotes wound healing and has anesthetic properties.€
Those all sound like positive things.
Wikipedia says that propolis can do everything from help sore throats with propolis lozenges, treat skin burns, prevent plaque buildup on teeth, and even works as a possible immunomodulator.
RAS, or Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis, which is the condition that chronic canker sore sufferers have, has been understood to be an autoimmune condition, in which the body's own immune system attacks and causes harm to the body. In the case of canker sores, it seems to be an over production of a cell-terminating protein that causes an ulceration around a source of trauma. So any treatment that regulates the immune system holds a lot of promise for canker sores.
It supposedly even combats the growth of tumors.
