You are probably only to well aware that the number of failed back surgery cases is really very high but what are the most common causes of failed back surgery.

Before we go any further it should be noted that the majority of back surgery is extremely successful but due to the massive numbers of people who suffer from back pain and who go on to have surgery, the failed back surgery cases are relatively high.

When back surgery does go wrong it is often the surgeon himself who gets the blame. Many experts think this is unfair because there really are a number of reasons when a problem does occur. Some instances of back surgery are a last resort for the patient who is desperate to ease their pain and the fact is that in some of these cases, surgery is not the answer and when surgery does not solve the problem it is classed as failed back surgery, even though there was little hope of it working in the first place.

Misdiagnosis can be another cause of failed back surgery because the patient may be experiencing pain in the back but the cause of the pain may be coming from another part of the body, usually problems in the neck and hips can cause pain in the back but an operation on the back in cases such as this is obviously no good at all.

Whilst there are many causes of failed back surgery that cannot be attributed to the surgeon, in some instance the surgeon must take full responsibility for surgery that has gone wrong. An example of this would be when the surgeon has to operate close to the spine and if nerve damage occurs it can often mean that more damage has been caused and the situation can be worse than before the operation.

To narrow down the chances of failed back surgery it would be a wise decision to make sure that your surgeon is highly experienced in this field and even before an operation takes place every precaution should be made to ensure that surgery is absolutely necessary, such as opinions from different doctors and various x rays.

Also bear in mind when you see the statistics for failed back surgery that the more serious operations are included in these figures which some people would say gives a false indication of failed back surgery as a whole.
