How to Switch From Mac Mail to Thunderbird
- 1). Go to the Thunderbird page on the mozillamessaging.com website and click the "Free Download" button. Click "Save File," then click "OK" in the pop-up window.
- 2). Double-click the "Thunderbird.dmg" file. A new Finder window will open. Drag the "Thunderbird" file into the "Applications" folder.
- 3). Double-click "Thunderbird" in the Applications folder. You will be prompted to set up a new profile.
- 4). Enter your name, email address and email password in the fields provided. Select "IMAP" or "POP3" as provided by your email service provider. Click "Create Account."
- 5). Move your mouse to the bottom of the screen and right-click the Thunderbird icon in the Dock. Click "Options," then "Keep in Dock."
- 6). Click the "Mail" icon and drag it to the Trash. With Mac Mail removed from the Dock, there is no need to deactivate your account in Mac Mail. It will be safe in the Applications folder should you decide to switch back to it.
- 1). Open Thunderbird and right-click "Local Folders." Click "New Folder." Type a name, such as "Import," in the "Name" field and click "OK." Quit Thunderbird.
- 2). Open a Finder window. Click your user account on the left of the window. Click "Library," "Mail" and then "Mailboxes." Right-click the "Import" file, then click "Show Package Contents."
- 3). Right-click the "mbox" file and select "Copy." Right-click the desktop and click "Paste Item." Click the pasted file on the desktop, then click it a second time to make the name editable. Type "Import" as the new name and press "Enter."
- 4). Click the "Back" button in the Finder window until you are back in the "Library" folder. Click "Thunderbird," then "Profiles." Click your profile name folder, "Mail" and then "Local Folders."
- 5). Drag the "Import" file on the desktop into the "Local Folders" folder. A dialog box will open. Click "Replace" to replace the current "Import" file with the one from the desktop.
- 6). Launch Thunderbird. Click the "Import" folder under "Local Folders." Your Mac Mail emails are in this folder.
