How to Develop a Black & White Reproduction

    • 1). Lay everything you need out in an easily-accessible, logical format, as you are going to need to grapple in the dark for them.

    • 2). Turn off all of the lights and unwind the film from its canister.

    • 3). Load the film onto the spool by feeling around for the end, putting the film into it, then slowly wrapping it around. You should practice this with a dummy roll of film beforehand to make sure you know what to do -- it seems easy in the light, but is completely different in the dark.

    • 4). Put the spool into the container and seal it tight. Turn the lights back on.

    • 5). Pour developer into the canister and shake it once a minute until you've reached the suggested amount of time on the side of the developer's bottle. Pour it out and pour the stop bath in, again following the suggested time on the bottle. Pour the stop bath out and pour fixer in. Finally, pour a final wash in. Your negatives are now ready.

    • 6). Pull the negatives out and let them dry.

    • 7). Fill three trays with developer, stop bath and fixer. Turn on your safelight.

    • 8). Take a piece of photo paper out of your paper safe and place it under the enlarger. Put a negative in the slot in the enlarger, and turn the enlarger on. The enlarger functions like a slide projector, and the paper is light-sensitive, so you are essentially taking another photo. Time your exposure.

    • 9). Place the paper in developer, stop bath and fixer (in order, not at the same time). You will see it appear as you develop it.
