Hot Tub Health and Safety Tips

Having your own hot tub offers many benefits. Great for relaxing and visually appealing, a hot tub can bring your family together and create a nice atmosphere for entertaining. While there are many advantages to owning a hot tub, it is very important to pay attention to safety. Arctic Spas Manitoba wants you and your family to be safe in your hottub. Here are some hot tub health and safety tips:
  • Always shower before soaking in your hot tub in order to get rid of bacteria, deodorant, creams, lotions, etc. This will help keep your spa clean and reduce the chances of passing on infection.
  • Don't let the water rise above 104o (40o C). If you do, you are putting yourself and others who soak in your hot tub at risk of heat-related illnesses.
  • Don't stay in your hot tub for too long. Generally, you shouldn't spend more than 15 minutes in your spa at a time.
  • Don't soak in your hot tub if you've been drinking alcohol. Both drinking alcohol and soaking in hot water can expand your blood vessels. Combining the two can be very dangerous.
  • Keep all surfaces around your spa clear from clutter—especially glass cups. If a glass were to break in your tub, it would be nearly impossible to remove all of the broken fragments.
  • Walk, don't run. The area around your hot tub can get pretty slippery. By walking carefully, you can avoid nasty falls. To provide extra traction, you can put mats on the ground around your tub.
  • For obvious reasons, make sure there are no electrical appliances or cords within reach of your hot tub.
  • Pregnant women should not soak in hot tubs. It is not safe for a pregnant woman to soak in water over 100o as it can raise her heart rate, which can interfere with the baby's development.
  • Never leave children unsupervised in your hot tub.
  • Make sure that all the gates guarding your hot tub are locked, secure and out of children's reach.
  • When not in use, make sure your hot tub is firmly covered. This will not only protect your hot tub from debris, but it will also prevent children and pets from falling in.
  • Have a first aid kit on hand in case of an accident.
  • Be prepared for seasonal changes. Make sure to clear the path from your house to your hot tub of ice and other hazards.

By putting these tips to use, you can enjoy soaking in your spa and be prepared. For more health and safety tips, you can talk to the staff at Arctic Spas Manitoba in Oakbluff. We have one of the widest selections of hot tub accessories and hot tubs in Manitoba.
