Alaska"s Commitment to Sustainability is Guided by Strict Fishery Management
Alaska's fishery management methods are some of the toughest and most controlled in the world. They are also the most successful. Not long ago in fact, Alaska was heading on the very same destructive path as many other fisheries today. However, the state government intervened and changed the state's course. Now, Alaska boasts a healthy marine ecosystem which is in no danger of depletion or over fishing. This means that the state will continue to provide some of the world's best tasting, high quality seafood for years and years to come.
Alaska's fishery management methods are controlled by the state. Oversight is tight. Marine stewardship is the first and foremost goal, for if there is no marine life left to steward, the whole industry collapses and Alaska as a whole, from the fisheries, to the corporations to the local fisherman understand this very well. The government recruits scientists to work with fisheries to determine fishing quotas as well as better practice and management methods. Scientists actually go out in the field with the fisheries to assess the state of the fish population and to establish when fishing seasons should be opened and how much fish can be caught viably, without harming the population as a whole. Alaska's fish are allowed to repopulate naturally, thereby ensuring their future survival.
Other notable fishery management methods include the incorporation of special Marine Protected Areas which provide a safe haven for marine life. In these areas, certain fishing is prohibited and research is conducted to ensure that no harm comes to Alaska's fisheries.
