How to Choose a Mattress Size
How do you pick the right size mattress, and why is it important? Sleep is supposed to be comfortable and restorative, and the right sized mattress can help. So, just as other factors such as support, comfort, durability and cost matter when buying a mattress, it is also important to choose a mattress size that is just right for you.
To choose a mattress size that perfectly fits the way you sleep, consider these factors:
Consider Your Present Mattress Size:
What is your mattress size at present? And are you happy with it? Your body adapts over time to occupying a certain amount of space when you sleep. There is a big chance that you may find it very difficult to adjust to a smaller size mattress.
If you are happy with that size, stick to it. Otherwise go for a bigger one. However, you may find it more pleasant to go one size up because it gives you more room to stretch.
Consider Your Own Size:
If you are taller or heavier, you may require a bigger sleep surface to be truly comfortable. Conversely, a too big mattress may not seem cozy enough for a smaller person. For optimal comfort, consider buying a mattress that is at least 4-6 inches longer than your height. Make sure that you can change positions on your mattress easily. Try it out in the store before you commit to taking it home.
Consider Your Sleeping Habits (and Those of Your Partner):
Changing positions while you sleep calls for extra room on the mattress.
Are you a quiet sleeper, or do you frequently change positions? How about your partner? When either one of you tosses or turns it could mean disturbed sleep for the other partner. A bigger mattress could mean a better night’s sleep and fewer disturbances for the other one.
If this is a factor in your mattress shopping, then you may also want to check out different sleep surfaces while you are at it. Some of the newer ones help with motion transfer, so if there is not enough room for a bigger mattress, you may still avoid the discomfort by investing in one that stops motion transfer.
Consider Whether You Share Your Bed:
Do you share your bed? While the mattress you choose may be large enough for your own needs, and those of your sleep partner, but consider if you share your bed from time to time with your little ones or pets such as large dogs or cats.
Even a small cat requires extra room, and you don’t want to be pushed into a corner for lack of space. Get a bigger mattress if that is the case.
Consider Your Space:
This cannot be emphasized enough. Whichever piece of furniture you choose, measure your space, doorways, hallways and stairs to see if you can get the piece into your room.
Today, some mattress manufacturers have made it easier for consumers. Mattresses can now be rolled up and delivered in such a way that they can make it through staircases and hallways, but I am assuming you remembered to measure your own room as well to make sure that once it gets there, your mattress fits well into your room.
