Guide Review - Kill The Client - 'Set For Extinction'

Dallas, Texas-based grindcore act Kill The Client return with Set For Extinction, their third album. Kill The Client play straightforward grindcore with a very rough, deep sound, sounding very similar to Brutal Truth in their overall approach to the genre. In fact, Kill The Client’s sound is heavy enough to also invite comparisons to the heavier Southern sludge bands, such as Eyehategod or Thou, just played at 180-250 beats per minute.

Songs are quite short, usually in the one minute range, and alternate from all out blasts to a few mid-paced dirges. Samples are, thankfully, only used very sparingly, if at all, allowing Kill The Client to get their point across entirely with the music, stretched out over 19 songs in just over 26 minutes.

Kill The Client are at their best when they’re simply going all out with balls out grindcore. The deep, exceedingly sound greatly aids the cause as Kill The Client eschew any sort of flair with their approach. Not nearly as technical as current leaders in the genre, such as Cephalic Carnage (OK, go ahead and start giving me Hell), or as flashy with variations in songwriting as is the case with Brutal Truth, Kill The Client just rely on bashing the listener over the head.

The approach works well enough, as Set For Extinction is a solid entry in the genre. However, the lack of originality in the band’s sound will probably relegate the band to a status a notch below that of the heavy hitters in the grindcore genre. That’s probably just fine, though, as Set For Extinction does exactly what grindcore is supposed to do; that is, blow your head off.
