Choosing the Best Boat Cover

101 7
When choosing appropriate covers for their boats, it is important for boaters to consider the climate and conditions in which they live, the style of their boats and whether they require custom or semi-custom covers, and how they plan on storing their boats during the winter.

Boaters who live in hot, humid climates will need boat covers that are breathable; otherwise, there runs a risk of mildew growth. Boaters who prefer to live in dryer climates, but that still have white winters, such as Utah, will want boat covers that are durable and have UV protection. Wherever they call home, boaters can be sure to find the right boat cover fabric.

Double Duck fabric is a suitable choice for boaters in dry climates who plan on storing their boats at an indoor storage facility. Double Duck is a poly/cotton canvas blend, 35 percent cotton for softness and 65 percent polyester for strength. It is treated with mildew and water repellent and has good breathability. It will also give boaters fair UV protection. Double Duck is backed by a 3-year warranty; however, if properly cared for it can last for much longer.

Sharkskin Plus works well for semi-custom boat covers. Made from acrylic-coated polyester, it is lightweight and durable. Sharkskin Plus provides increased UV resistance suitable for boat covers to be used in Utah. It also has better water repellency and is more breathable than Double Duck. Sharkskin Plus has a 5-year warranty for a modest price.

Performance PolyGuard, which is 100 percent heavy-duty polyester, is a better option for boaters living in hot, humid climates. It is extremely water resistant and can be used for semi-custom boat covers. Utah boaters would benefit from the fabric's great UV protection. It is also mildew resistant, breathable and is backed by a 5-or-more-year warranty.

The best boat cover fabric on the market today, used for custom covers, is Sunbrella. Sunbrella is 100 percent acrylic. Because it is 100 percent solution dyed, it is fade-proof and perfect for boat covers used in Utah that are exposed to the desert sun. In addition to excellent UV protection, Sunbrella has superior breathability and is ultra-repellent of both water and mildew. Though backed by only a 7-year warranty, this fabric has been known to last upwards of ten years. For best results for a boat cover, Sunbrella fabric is your best bet. This fabric will protect your boat and you when on your boat.
