Around the Tamar River, the river that forms most of the border between Devon and Cornwall is the Tamar Valley. Although this outstanding natural beauty was proposed in 1963 it was not designated until 1995. The history of this valley with its richness and beauty is said to be some of the finest scenery in the west country. The estuary surrounding the Tamar Valley is a known haven for varied wildlife.

A railway line running from Devonport in Devon to Gunnislake in Cornwall is a great way to explore all of the fun activities of the Tamar Valley. There is also a ferry boat for cruises or by car or on foot on the extensive local footpaths or the cyclist pathways.

Four ancient towns are the trademark areas of the Tamar Valley. Launceston in the north, has a steam railway and a Norman castle. The castle stood as a symbol of wealth and power in the middle ages. Situated on the top of a large natural mound the castle dominates the surrounding landscape. Tavistock to the east is a market town with a gateway to daily food and crafts shopping.
