Guide Review - CalliGrapher® 8.5 For Pocket PCs
CalliGrapher® 8.5 can be downloaded from the PhatWare web site to your laptop and then installed to your PDA or you can download a CAB file directly to your PDA. Just having the option of downloading directly to a PDA makes this software useful. It's a little convenience that bodes well for how the software will work.
While you don't really need to do any training the provided tutorials can help you get up and running more smoothly and they will also provide you with tips on getting the most from this software.
PhatWare also has a very detailed User Guide available for download in pdf format. I do recommend downloading and reading the User Guide. As a southpaw I did find that I did have to change how I form letters but once I'd been working with CalliGrapher® 8.5 for some time, it got much easier to remember which way to form the letters so there were less errors converting the handwriting.
The software includes a spellchecker and customizable dictionary so you can be sure that you are spelling things properly and any new words or specialized terms can be added.
CalliGrapher® 8.5 can be used in Write Anywhere mode which lets you write anywhere on the screen and then places the text to the active window for the open application. It can also be used in Write Pad mode which opens a small window at the bottom of the screen to enter your information.
A neat addition to the CalliGrapher® 8.5 program is PenCommander which is a scripting utility that enables you to execute commands that you have set up just by writing a word and then putting a circle around the word.
The handwriting recognition works quite well, even if you are one of those folks who use a combination of cursive and print. I'm guilty of that.
RiteCalc is another little program included with CalliGrapher® 8.5 and it lets you do calculator functions using your own handwriting.
