Right-Handed Vs Left-Handed Guitar

If you happen to be left-handed, should you look to buy a left-handed guitar? Um..
..
Maybe.
When you walk into a music store, no matter how big, you will find that they only have a limited number of left-handed guitars.
Why is this? It seems unfair to a left-handed person doesn't it? The fact is that the guitar is an instrument that needs both hands to play it.
Not only that, but each hand has to do different things.
You have to train the fingers of both of your hands anyway, and both hands are equally important.
So it shouldn't really matter one way or the other most of the time.
If you insist on playing left-handed anyway, do not simply turn your guitar around and try to play that way.
All of your chords will be backward.
What was on the bottom will be on the top, and what was on top will be on the bottom.
This makes a major difference in the way you will have to play to make any chord sound right.
It's like trying to play while looking into a mirror.
Don't restring your guitar so that it looks left-handed either.
Both the nut and the bridge are cut for a right-handed guitar.
If you choose to restring the guitar to make it look left-handed, you have to reverse the nut and the bridge.
I would not try this yourself.
Also, if your guitar has what is called a pick guard on its face, simply turning it around to a left-handed position will put that pick guard above the strings rather than below it - making your guitar look, well, weird.
If you absolutely must play left-handed, your best bet is to buy a left-handed guitar rather than try to mess with changing over a right-handed one.
But in many cases, it shouldn't be necessary.
