Songwriting is a very rewarding activity with many amazing benefits. It simultaneously exercises your senses, thinking skills, and creativity as you compose music and lyrics. And the best part is that it is fun and challenging, so you will enjoy it as well as look forward to it!

The idea of creating music is an excellent outlet for feelings. Whether you are falling in love or working through a tough time, writing can be a good source of therapy. You can express your emotions creatively and produce something that was not there before. Even if the mood you started from was negative, it is almost impossible not to feel excited about completing a song. That is what makes the process therapeutic; it helps you move past negativity in a healthy, positive way.

Another benefit of music is that it can be done anywhere and anytime. All you need is your mind and a pen and paper (or computer) to write a song. From brainstorming to finding the right chords on the instrument of your choice, the best ideas will most likely come when you are relaxed. Take breaks as needed and never put any stress or pressure on yourself when engaging in any creative process. Anxiety is extremely counter-productive to what you are trying to accomplish. Besides, crafting a new musical masterpiece is meant to be fun.

Writing songs can also bring you closer to something else that you enjoy: listening to music. By focusing on the various elements of your favorite songs, you gain a better understanding of what makes them so effective from the "inside out." Then, that knowledge is applied to your own music in an original way. Specific techniques are used to generate emotional responses and once you uncover them in existing examples, you are one step closer to increasing the connection your next song will have with the listener.

Inspiration is everywhere and being receptive to it on a daily basis helps you get the most out of the events that happen. For example, think about conversations that you have or the people and situations that you encounter. They all have the potential to become ideas to develop. Basically, anything that catches your attention is something you should remember, write down, or record. Keeping track of random thoughts as they enter your mind will provide you with a lot of topics to choose from; reducing or preventing writer's block in the future.

As you continue to write, you will gradually become more comfortable and confident, which leads to better and better songs. Everyone progresses at their own pace, so be sure not to compare your songs with others; the only person you are competing with is yourself. Again, write when you are feeling inspired or motivated and set reasonable goals. No matter how experienced you are, there is always something new to learn. Music has the power to change perspective, improve lives, and enhance the way we feel. Take advantage of all that it has to offer and keep writing!
