- 1). Cut the string sticking out of the mower with a utility knife if the string frayed but did not break in half. Pull the string out of the black handle. You must reuse the handle.
- 2). Remove the shroud from the recoil starter by removing the screws that hold the shroud onto the top of the mower.
- 3). Uncoil the string and count the number of times the string coils around the pulley.
- 4). Loosen the setscrew on the pulley with a screwdriver and then pull the pulley off the engine shaft.
- 5). Pull the string out of the hole in the bottom of the pulley.
- 6). Cut a piece of replacement nylon string that measures the same length as the original string.
- 7). Tie a knot into one end of the string and then feed the string up though the hole in the pulley.
- 8). Place the pulley back onto the mower shaft and secure it with the setscrew.
- 9). Wrap the string around the pulley as many times as the previous string was wrapped.

Place the shroud over the recoil pulley. Feed the string through the eyelet hole on the shroud. Secure the shroud to the mower. - 11
Pull the string up the handle of the mower and place it through the eyelet on the mower handle. - 12
Slide the black T- handle onto the rope and then tie a knot in the rope. Pull the handle to sink the knot into the hole in the top of the handle.
