LIHEAP and WAP

• The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federal program administered throughout the country. You can receive a one-time assistance payment if you are in danger of disconnection. To qualify, you must have an income less than 60 percent of the state median income (SMI). Asset restrictions may also apply, depending on the state.
  
  The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) works along with the LIHEAP program to reduce energy consumption by evaluating your home and determining if efficiency-related repairs or upgrades are necessary. Visit the LIHEAP Clearinghouse website to access the application for your state.
  
  

TANF

• If you have lost your job or are experiencing a hardship, consider applying for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Depending on your state, the program may be referred to by a different name. TANF provides cash grants to families that can be used to cover utility bills or other household expenses. Each state sets its own requirements for eligibility. You will typically need to work or participate in a work equivalent, such as job training or community service. Charities

• Local charities often have funds reserved to assist the community with utility bills. The Salvation Army awards assistance to cover basic needs. Some Salvation Army locations also sponsor energy assistance programs, including HeatShare and Project Share.
  
  The American Red Cross is a charitable organization with office locations across the country, which awards assistance based on need. You will need to provide proof of income and residency. Catholic Charities is another national charity that contributes toward fuel and energy bills.
  
  

United Way

• The United Way awards assistance to help with bills when funds are available. Through the United Way's 211 information hotline, you can connect with an operator 24 hours a day to receive referrals to various local programs. The operator can evaluate your situation and make suggestions based on your needs. Some assistance programs and churches require a referral before offering assistance. Call 2-1-1 to reach the hotline.
