3 Common Foods That Can Trigger A Stroke

Poor dietary choices play a significant role in contributing to a higher incidence of strokes. An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks blood flow to your brain, starving the brain of oxygen which inevitably results in brain cell damage. Stroke kills. Without much warning. And should you survive it, the damages can be most devastating and debilitating.

1. Trans-Fats

Trans-fats are added into a large variety of processed foods, and I mean large, take these as examples: chips, crackers, cookies, biscuits, store-bought baked goods, breakfast cereals, energy bar, popcorn, salad dressing, cake mixes, gravy mixes, whipped cream, non-dairy creamer, flavoured coffees and savoury dips. As you can see, not all the food items listed seemingly look or taste "fatty". A food label that indicates "partially hydrogenated vegetable oils" or "shortening" means the product contains trans-fats.

Trans fats are to be avoided because they are known to cause inflammation that could lead to strokes, heart problems and other illnesses.

2. Cured and Processed Meats

Preservatives and colouring fixatives, such as sodium nitrate and nitrite are found in smoked and processed meats to keep them from going bad and to give the flesh  that pink colour.  These compounds have been shown to damage your blood vessels, causing arteries to harden and narrow which could increase the risk of a stroke. In fact the real risk of nitrates is when they are cooked at high temperatures they are converted into nitrosamines which have been linked to certain cancers (e.g. colon, gastric, pancreatic).

Eating large amounts of processed deli meats such as sausage, pastrami, hot dog and bacon may also :
  • Increase the risk of diabetes
  • Reduce your lung function and up your risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

3. Artificial Sweetener

Man-made artificial sweeteners are consistently in the limelight for creating hazards in many different ways and thus it is no surprise that now it has been tied to stroke as well.

We should be aware of the dangers of artificial sweeteners as they are excitotoxins that pose a threat to neurological dysfunction and disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, premature birth, birth defects and cancer. Excitotoxins are scary chemicals that react with certain receptors in the brain that cause cell degeneration.

Artificial sweeteners are known by names such as aspartame (Nutrasweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure), sucralose (Splenda), saccharin (Sweet'N Low, SugarTwin) and acesulfame k (Sunett, Sweet One).
