How to Build a Brick Patio With Sand
- 1). Measure out the desired dimensions of the patio in the location in your yard with a tape measure. Mark the dimensions with landscaping spray paint.
- 2). Dig out the marked area to a depth of 8 inches with a shovel. Fill the dug-out area with a 4-inch layer of gravel.
- 3). Tamp down the gravel by striking the surface of the gravel with a plate compactor evenly over the entire surface of the patio area.
- 4). Fill in the remaining depth of the patio area with a layer of sand. Smooth out the surface of the sand with the back side of a bow rake.
- 5). Lay the first row of bricks flat with the long side of the brick along the border. Butt the bricks end to end against each other until the row is completed. Continue laying the patio in rows in the same manner until the patio is completed. Do not worry that the bricks are not completely tight, as the gaps will be filled in with sand. Tap any uneven bricks into place with a rubber mallet.
- 6). Dump a small pile of sand on the patio surface. Brush the sand into all of the cracks in between the bricks with a shop broom. Clean off any excess sand with the shop broom.
