Multiple Multicast Registration Protocol
- MMRP is part of the ZebOS Routing Suite, which, in turn, is part of the ZebOS Network Platform. ZebOS is an operating system for network devices, such as routers. The software for the system is produced in modules and interfaces with the ZebOS command line system. MMRP is a Data Link Layer protocol.
- One of ZebOS's Layer 2 modules handles multicasting. This is an addressing function. A number of IP (Internet Protocol) addresses are reserved for multicasting. The administrator nominates an address, and assigns it to a group. Devices wishing to be part of that group send a request to that address. A list of addresses is compiled and this list represents that address. When messages are sent to this address, they are automatically forwarded to all the addresses in the list.
- MMRP manages the lists of group members for multicasting. It holds the address list as MAC (Media Access Control) addresses rather than as IP addresses.
