Chronic Hepatitis C is a viral disease of the liver.
It can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, cancer of the liver, and liver failure.
There is a treatment offering a 70% cure rate, if you are the lucky candidate thats body excepts the treatment and depending on your Geno-type you may be cured in 3 - 12 months.
The patient starts with a blood test to see how high the viral load is in your blood stream.
A normal blood test would be at 200, but for instance, if your blood test shows liver enzymes at 1,750,000 then you would be considered a Geno-type 1.
The higher the load the lower the Geno-type.
A Geno-type 1 is treated for approximately one-full year.
Geno-type 2 & 3 would possibly be treated for six months and Geno-type 4-5 would possibly be less time.
The point is, you have a chance to be rid of this disease.
Symptoms may include an itchy skin sensation, jaundice (a yellowing of the skin and eyes), weakness and tiredness.
Then again, you may not have any symptoms at all, therefore being one of thousands walking around with this disease.
In that case you may never know until such a time as your liver causes severe complications, which would then be to late for the treatment.
Once diagnosed, you start a series of three immunizations for Hepatitis A & B given once a month for three months.
You must also be alcohol free for at least six months before treatment.
Also, for your benefit, you're scheduled for classes explaining the treatment and how it works, and how to administer the shot (Interferon) and the daily Ribavin tablets.
Upon starting the treatment you will be scheduled for an ultrasound of the liver to check for cirrhosis.
After all this, the treatment begins March 9, 2009.
The doctor will order your prescriptions called Ribavin and Interferon.
Ribavin is a pill that will be taken everday throughout the duration of the treatment.
Interferon is a shot that you give to yourself once a week.
Interferon is a drug that may or may not cause side effects.
Everyone is unique, therefore side effects may be unique.
Generally you may have sore joints and muscles, a little bit of hair loss, headaches, and plainly speaking you may have flu-like symptoms.
The Interferon may also cause patients to have suicidal thoughts or thoughts of hurting others.
But, remember, you may not have any side effects.
Every two weeks, you will have a new blood test to make sure that your viral load is decreasing.
This is exactly what you want to happen.
If it is going down then it is working.
If it is not changing, and you keep receiving treatment possibly two months without change, then it is safe to say that you are not one of the 70% that can be cured.
In this case the treatment will stop.
It has been documented that taking 1,000 to 2,000 IU of Vitamin D may help the immune system and prepare the body to receive treatment favorably.
Vitamin D has been instrumental in the well-being of cancer patients as well.
Of course, nutrition and exercise are also beneficial for being strong and receptacle to treatment.
A note of caution for all that read this article, there are so many people walking around with Hepatitis that don't even know it.
