How to Tend Flower Vines
- 1). Plant the vine in a part of the yard where it will receive the recommended level of sunlight. Full-sun flowering vines require at least six hours of sun, while partial-shade vines grow well in direct sun for some part of the day and shade for the rest. Full-shade plants must be in an area where there is no direct sun.
- 2). Encourage tendrils to climb up a trellis or stake. Gently tie the end of a tendril with a piece of string and then wrap the opposite end of the string around the desired location on the trellis to provide ample guidance for horizontal growth with the vine. Secure larger, heavier vines to wire fencing with thin floral wire.
- 3). Water the flowering vines according to the care instructions for the specific variety. Established vines require less water than newer plants, according to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
- 4). Pinch off vine tips after planting to encourage new growth. Once the vine is established, remove dead or diseased branches frequently to keep the rest of the plant healthy. Each spring, remove the vine's older branches down to approximately a foot of the roots to promote new growth in the flowering season. Trim extended shoots off the vine with pruning shears to maintain the shape of the plant and encourage flowering, as needed, throughout the year.
- 5). Add nutrients or mulch to the base of the vine each spring to encourage healthy growth. If you have sand or clay soil, add compost to enrich the dirt with proper nutrients.
