The popularity of theses sites has really not much to do with the domain name itself; though some have instant recall because they are associated with a company or organization that has an overwhelming presence on the web as well as in the daily life of people. Domains like Hotmail, Yahoo, and Microsoft have a ready association with all internet users and may really not be searched by people because they remember the names themselves so well. So really the most searched names would be searched for by users after keying in certain keywords.

So how do search engines narrow down on the most searched websites and put them up in their lists when a person searches for them. They use a combination of many aspects of the domain, which have more to do with other factors than the domain name itself. For this we must understand the key factors which search engines use to rank or list the most searched domains.

The chief role of a search engines is to find the keywords that are keyed in by searchers on their websites or other tools meant for searching. The search engines then determine the relevance of that particular keyword to the site and based on certain criterion rank the various websites on which the key word appears to give you a final list. So ultimately the most searched domains would have in them the keywords that are the most searched.

In order to find the most searched domain names search engines would rely on the positioning of the domain name and the reliability of its hosting provider.
