Can I Hook Up a Blu Ray Player to an Older Surround Sound Receiver?
- Audio composite and component cables for connecting your Blu-ray player to your older surround sound receiver are available at online and area electronics, hardware and home improvement stores. The cables are also available from online auction websites. Only purchase composite or component cables in the length that you need – if the distance between your Blu-ray player and surround sound receiver is 2 feet, buy composite or component cables that are 2 feet long. Using composite or component cables longer than needed results in audio signal degradation and the possibility of static interfering with the cables.
- Turn off and unplug both your Blu-ray player and surround sound receiver. Turn the devices around so the back of the units are facing you. Locate the “Left” and “Right” composite or component ports on the back of your surround sound receiver under the “DVD” heading. Locate the “Left Out ” and “Right Out ” composite or component ports on the back of your Blu-ray player. Left audio channel cables are white in color and right audio channel cables are red. Plug one end of a white composite or component cable in the “Left In” or similar worded port on the back of your surround sound receiver. Plug one end of a red composite or component cable in the “Right In” or similar worded port on the back of your receiver. Plug the other ends of the cables into the “Left Out” and “Right Out” or similar worded ports on the back of your Blu-ray player. Turn both devices around, plug in and turn on the devices.
- Press the “DVD” button on your surround sound receiver’s remote control or front panel to activate the DVD composite or component ports. The composite or component ports on your Blu-ray player are automatically activated and transmit audio signals to your receiver once you connect the cables. Insert a disc into your Blu-ray player and press “Play” on the device’s remote control or front panel to hear the disc’s audio. Adjust your surround sound’s volume to your liking. If you don’t hear any audio, check the cable connections in both devices and that you have selected “DVD” on your surround sound’s remote control or front panel.
- Purchase composite or component cables with gold connectors if you notice static emitting from your surround sound’s speakers. The static is from radio waves interfering with the silver connectors on the composite or component cables interfacing your Blu-ray player with your surround sound receiver. Gold composite and component cables are also available at online and area electronics, hardware and home improvement stores.
