Purchase a software audio editing program. These range in price, depending if you want only MIDI, or sampling, abilities or MIDI and audio, or live recording, abilities. If you choose not to buy a program, your song will be medium-low quality at best.

    • 2). Connect the MIDI cable to your computer and keyboard and change the settings in your program to get it to recognize your keyboard.

    • 3). Load samples of instruments, such as drums, bass and synthesizers to begin playing your song. Because your of your keyboard's MIDI capabilities, it will not play these notes itself, but rather tell the computer to play exactly what you played, how you played it, using its high quality technology.

    • 4). Play a simple chord progression with a loud, raw, saw-type synth or with a quiet, evolving pad. This will be the backbone and guiding theme of the song.

    • 5). Add a light drum layer that continues to build and add more drums and other instrument layers, such as bass or lead synths.

    • 6). Create a breaking point or fill to transition into the main beat of the song. A breaking point is when all music builds to such an epic height that you must cut it all out without warning and revert back to a simple, sustained pad or like item for a short time. This could happen for as little one measure before the main beat.

    • 7). Create your main beat. By this point, there should be no quiet tracks playing. The synths should all be raw and hard and the bass must be present. The drums should have the kick sound once at the top of every count, or four times per measure. In addition, the snare should sound, preferably on the second and fourth count of each measure for standard techno. Hi-hat or another sound of your choice should sound on the "and" between each count. These are just guidelines for standard techno beats and can always be experimented with.

    • 8). Use the software program's editing capabilities to add reverb, compression, delay, panning and other sound effects to make your song sound professional and high quality. If your keyboard is a workstation that you can record songs in without using a computer, this is the only step you will not be able to complete. Because it is also the most important step, using a workstation alone will greatly reduce the professional feel of your music. You also cannot use a microphone to record vocals in many workstations.

    Using a Cheap Keyboard

    • 1). Search the keyboard for preset rhythms and play a techno beat. Cheap keyboards usually do not let you record any sounds, thus the beat selection you have will be limited.

    • 2). Select a synthesizer sound from the sound bank and play a combination of techno leads and chords along with the beat.

    • 3). Use the "Split" or "Layer" functions if your keyboard has them to divide the keyboard into two sounds, such as bass and lead, or to mix two sounds together across the entire board. There is nothing more you can do and, while this is the lowest possible quality, it can be done quickly and may be useful for karaoke or a learning experience.
