How to Replace a Belt on a 40-Inch Riding Mower
- 1). Place the mower on level ground and set the parking brake to keep it stabilized.
- 2). Disengage the PTO lever or the lever that forces the blades to move. Disengaging the lever will stop the blades and increase the slack on the belt.
- 3). Lower the mower deck to the low position or the position closest to the ground. To do this, locate the height adjustment lever on the deck and move it down.
- 4). Locate the pulley on the bottom of the engine and pull the belt off the blade. Most mowers have a belt guard between the mower and the mower deck. Pull the belt though the belt guard.
- 5). Take note of the belt routing on the mower deck. If necessary, make a diagram for reference.
- 6). Remove the belt from the pulley system on the mower deck and replace it with a new belt. Route the belt correctly to avoid sync issues with the blades.
- 7). Stretch the belt past the belt guard and then place the belt around the pulley.
- 8). Raise the mower deck back to its normal cutting height and then engage the PTO lever before you begin to mow.
