How to Add Accounts with Good History to Your Credit Report
- 1). Obtain a copy of your credit report. You can order your report for free at annualcreditreport.com. This site allows consumers to request one report each year from Experian, TransUnion and Equifax, the three main credit reporting agencies. You can also order the report directly from the bureau itself, either by mail or phone, or via its website.
- 2). Look over the "Accounts" section of the report. Note which of your accounts are reported and which ones aren't. Check to see if the account with good history is listed.
- 3). Call the creditor of the missing account. Inform the creditor that the account isn't reported. Ask what their credit reporting practices are. The creditor may have made an error in not reporting your account. Not all creditors report to the bureaus, and it is within their discretion to do so or not.
- 4). Make a request to the creditor. Ask if they will submit a one-time report of the account to the credit bureau -- even if the creditor doesn't normally make bureau reports. If the creditor does report the account, remember that the account data will not update in the future.
- 5). Update the account manually if a major positive change occurs on that account, such as when you receive a credit limit increase on the account or the balance reaches zero. You can do this by filing a dispute with the credit bureau. The bureau will investigate your claim, contact the creditor, then update the account to reflect the new information. You can file a dispute online at the bureau's website, by phone or mail. Accounts with a positive status remain on your credit report for up to 10 years.
