How Much Do Private Ice Skating Lessons Cost?
Private figure skating lessons involve two costs.
- First, each skater taking private lessons must pay the rink for the ice time the lesson will take place on.
The cost of skating on the ice (and skate rental if needed) are not included when skaters take private ice skating lessons. The cost of ice time at each ice arena will range from $5 to $15. Some sessions will be two hours long, but other sessions will be shorter.
(These costs are included when skaters take group lessons, so sometimes it is difficult for new skaters and their parents to understand why the rink charges for ice time when a skater takes private ice skating lessons.)
- Next, the skater will pay the instructor directly for the private lesson.
Lessons are usually twenty to thirty minutes in length. A skater can expect to pay about $20 to $30 for a twenty minute private figure skating lesson. Thirty minute private lessons will range from $30 to $45.
It is important for skaters to understand that figure skating coaches usually are independent contractors and are not employees of an ice arena. The rink usually charges coaches a percentage of each lesson or a monthly or daily fee for using the ice arena.
The rink expects figure skating coaches to explain that ice time usage is not included in the cost of private figure skating lessons. Coaches can get in trouble with a rink's management if their students do not pay for ice time.
