Dental caries (decay) and periodontal disease are the most common dental disorders. They are caused by bacteria and result in pain and problems with eating and speaking. Cavity formation, nerve damage, and abscess are complications. Prevention is by good oral hygiene, regular dental checks, and restricted intake of sugary foods and drink. Wearing ill-fitting dentures can cause mouth ulcers, frictional keratoses, and yeast infections, e.g. Candida. Consulting the general dentist Raleigh for common dental problems is very important. Some of the common dental problems are mentioned below.

Gingivitis- This is inflammation at the gum-tooth margin causing redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gums when brushing. Complications include periodontitis, pain, tooth loss, unpleasant tastes, halitosis, and problems with eating. It may affect general well-being. Prevention is as above but especially good tooth brushing at gum margins. Glossitis -The tongue is smooth, sore, sensitive, and erythematous due to the atrophy of the papillae. It is usually caused by nutritional deficit.

Stomatitis is inflammation of the mouth and can be infective or non-infective. Non-infective stomatitis often has an unknown cause but may be part of other Gl problems, e.g. Crohn's disease due to vitamin deficiency. It is a feature of iron deficiency, vitamin B2 deficiency, drug reactions, and Behcets (a multi-organ disease with unknown cause). Painful ulcers lasting up to 2 weeks are common. Bacterial stomatitis may be associated with streptococcal sore throat. Rare causes are Vincent's angina (pharyngeal infection with ulcerative gingivitis), tuberculosis, and syphilis. Fungal stomatitis usual cause is Candida. It may also affect the pharynx and oesophagus causing dysphagia. It occurs in patients who are immunosuppressed or who have severe illnesses (e.g. cancer), and also occurs as a result of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Viral stomatitis may be caused by herpes simplex (cold sores); hand, foot, and mouth disease; herpes zoster (shingles); and glandular fever. Angular stomatitis is inflammation at the angles of the mouth. It is common in older people and may be due to allergy, vitamin B deficiency, and iron deficiency. Xerostomia is a dry mouth, commonly caused by medication and often multiple drugs. It is also caused by salivary gland hypofunction in Sjogren's syndrome. The incidence of mouth cancer is rising. It presents with a sore or ulcer that is slow to heal; warty lumps or nodules; or white, speckled, or pigmented patches on the mucosa. Patients have difficulty speaking and swallowing. Treatment is by surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, alone or in combination. Only a doctor or general dentist Raleigh could help in providing the best treatment for all these problems.
