How to Pull Out a House Radiator

    • 1). Turn the heating system off or turn the thermostat to its lowest setting. Let the radiator that you will be removing cool down before proceeding with subsequent steps. Check the temperature of the radiator with the back of your hand.

    • 2). Turn off the water flow valves on either side of the base of the radiator by twisting the valve handles in a clockwise direction. (Note: Some radiators may have hand-operated valves, but some may require an adjustable wrench to turn the valve's hex nut fitting.)

    • 3). Place a bowl or other suitable container under one of the valves to drain water into. Place towels on the floor around the radiator to catch water spills. Hold the valve firmly with a pipe wrench. Loosen, but do not fully remove, the fitting which connects the valve to the water pipe with another pipe wrench in a counterclockwise direction.

    • 4). Allow water to drain into the bowl from the loosened fitting. Tighten the fitting when the bowl is full. Empty the bowl and repeat this procedure until all water has been drained from the radiator.

    • 5). Fully disconnect the radiator from both flow valves by holding the valve with a pipe wrench, while loosening the fitting with another pipe wrench in a counterclockwise direction. Twist the fittings by hand once they have been loosened to fully disengage them from the water pipes. Use a helper and lift the radiator straight up.
