How to Get a Teaching Certificate in Kentucky
- 1). Download the TC-1 application also known as "Teacher certification rank 1." Rank 1 is an entry-level position. Kentucky's Educational Professional Standards Board or EPSB has made the application available for download from the EPSB website at kyepsb.net. Click the link "Certification" and then click the link labeled "Application Forms." Choose the TC-1 application form from the drop-down menu. The six-page application will download as a PDF document. Print the application.
- 2). Complete all areas of the application except for section 4. Section 4 must be mailed to your degree-granting college for completion. Your college will provide official transcripts of your coursework to the EPSB. Official transcripts must be mailed directly from the university to the EPSB, not from the student. Your college will also need to provide verification in section 4 that you completed the state-approved teacher preparation program.
- 3). Provide verification from the superintendent of the school system where you completed the required student teaching experience. The superintendent will fill out Section 2 of the TC-1 application.
- 4). Take and pass the Praxis I test titled "Principles of Learning and Teaching" and Praxis II, which is a content-based examination assessing your knowledge of the subject areas you plan to teach. The Praxis II examination can be waived if you provide proof of at least two years of teaching experience.
- 5). Submit to a criminal background check and provide your fingerprints after completing the required TC-1 application, college transcripts and Praxis test scores. These fingerprints are compared to a national criminal database of fingerprints to ensure there is no match. You will also need to include a check or money order made payable to the "Kentucky State Treasurer" with you application materials. As of May 2010, this certification fee is $50 USD.
