Side Effects of Lariam
- Mild side effects include stomach upset, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, skin rash, fatigue, loss of appetite, hair loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia, strange dreams and lightheadedness. These side effects should go away after you get used to taking Lariam.
- Some serious side effects are rapid heart rate, slow heartbeat, palpitations, seizures, muscle pain, loss of coordination, numbness in hands, tingling in feet, vision changes, convulsions, liver problems or heart problems.
- Lariam can cause mental side effects including paranoia, hallucination, restlessness and unusual behavior. Unexplained anxiety, mood changes, depression and confusion can occur as well.
- Suicidal thoughts have been linked with Lariam, and some people taking Lariam have committed suicide. It is not known if Lariam was responsible.
- Some side effects, such as dizziness, loss of balances and vertigo, continue for months after discontinuing use of Lariam.
- Seek immediate medical attention if any mental problems occur when taking Lariam. The doctor may stop your dosage and put you on other anti-malaria medications.
