How to File Taxes While Engaged
- 1). Pick up IRS 1040 at a library or post office or download it from IRS.gov.
- 2). Collect all of your tax paperwork. This includes your income statements from the past year and receipts on any deductions you plan on taking.
- 3). Fill in the top label of the 1040. This includes your name, home address and Social Security number. Leave the "Spouse Social Security Number" blank because you are not married yet. Check off that you are single and if you are the head of household.
- 4). Write in any dependents into the "Exemptions" window. Include your child's first and last name, Social Security number and how they are related to you.
- 5). Move down to the "Income" section and include the amount made from your job in Section 7. Include any dividends earned, alimony, business income and Social Security benefits in the boxes below.
- 6). Put any deductions into the "Adjusted Gross Income" section. This includes any money in health savings accounts that you can count as deductions, IRS deductions and student loan deductions.
- 7). Follow the instructions in "Tax and Credits" moving into "Payments" to determine how much to pay in taxes.
- 8). Sign the bottom of the form and mail it to your nearest IRS location.
