CDMA Technology & Phones

    Facts

    • From its inception, CDMA technology transformed the wireless telecommunication industry. Unlike its analog predecessors, CDMA enables subscribers to transfer data, send text messages and place conference calls in addition to making standard voice calls.

    Benefits

    • The current CDMA interface -- 1xEV-DO (Evolution Data Only) -- allows data transfer at peak speeds of 2.4 Mpbs. EV-DO networks manage only high-speed data. Hence, handsets supporting EV-DO utilize the underlying CDMA network for voice calls. Both Verizon and Sprint have launched 1xEV-DO service. Much like its GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) counterpart, CDMA subscribers have lightening fast access to social networks, MP3 downloads, data transfer and trendy applications to customize their handset. CDMA devices have also evolved to meet customers' tastes and needs. Consumers can choose from devices with back-to-basics style and functionality to the latest Android innovations.

    Considerations

    • On the CDMA network, your account information is programmed to the phone. So if you have a lot of contacts, memos or calendar information and you decide to switch phones, that information will have to be re-entered manually unless your provider offers a back-up service which generally only saves your contact information. On the GSM network all your information can be saved to your SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) card. Although the CDMA interface 1xEV-DO network has proven to be very efficient, it is not readily available in all areas and requires a phone that is 1xEV-DO ready.
