Take a ferry cross the Mersey and see what Liverpool's neighbours have to offer
But what of its neighbours across the Mersey? There are many interesting towns and villages over the water on the Wirral which are well worth a visit. Among them is Birkenhead, whose park is well known to have provided the inspiration for Central Park in New York. It is also the home of the historic Birkenhead Market which was opened in 1835 and remains a key part of life in the town. Famous former residents of Birkenhead include Paul O'Grady, Glenda Jackson and World War One poet Wilfred Owen as well as rugby star Matt Dawson and Patricia Routledge, best known as Hyacinth Bucket (or Bouquet!) from Keeping Up Appearances.
If you fancy a trip to the seaside, look no further than New Brighton. The resort is currently benefiting from a £60 million regeneration project which includes an 800 seat theatre and conference centre. Phase two will feature a new Travelodge, a digital cinema and a new boating lake. The resort has frequent public transport links which means if you have booked into a hotel in Liverpool to tour the area, you can get back to base in less than 30 minutes.
If you're interested in the history of the area, a trip to Port Sunlight should be on your itinerary. This quaint village was actually built as a residential area for employees at the Lever Brothers soap factory and was named after the company's top product, Sunlight Soap. During the Second World War, the factory was targeted by enemy bombers due to its production of glycerine which was an essential component of bomb making. On the site is the Lady Lever Art Gallery which was founded in the 1920s by Lord Leverhulme in loving memory of his late wife. This features a collection of 18th and 19th century paintings, period furniture and an extensive display of Wedgewood chinaware.
If you fancy a day out with the kids while you're in the area, why not pay a visit to Sefton Park? This beautiful 200 acre park is Grade II* listed and boasts the bandstand which is said to be in the inspiration for The Beatles' Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. There's also a boating lake, a fairy glen and facilities for angling, as well as an aviary viewing point and a children's playground – so lots to keep them entertained! The park is also the location of the Grade II* listed Palm House which contains plant specimens from around the world. The main park is open 24 hours a day and there is plenty of parking available.
There truly is something for everyone to enjoy on the Wirral, and there are many Liverpool hotels you can choose from if you decide to pay a visit to the area - giving you a great base from which to enjoy your own magical mystery tour.
