      Telecommunications has become an essential part of the U.S. economy and provides telephone, television, Internet, wireless and other services to businesses and homes. A telecommunications project manager directs specific projects or business units for a telecommunications organization, and the job combines management, sales, technical expertise and financial responsibilities.

      These occupations require a bachelor's degree in telecommunication, multimedia technology or information technology. Obtaining Project Management Professional certification through the Project Management Institute can increase employment opportunities. In February 2010, Indeed.com lists a national average salary of $85,000 per year for these occupations.

    Management

    • Management responsibilities include reviewing the documented requirements of the project, then creating and executing project work plans, as well as identifying resources needed for the project. The project staff are assigned to individual responsibilities, and the project manager then manages day-to-day operational aspects of a project to ensure timely completion. This includes hiring, training and directing employees.

      Documentation is required throughout the project, and the project manager meets with internal and external customers with prepared reports to give progress updates, answer questions and make requested changes of project plans.

    Technical

    • Telecommunication project managers make all decisions on the scope and delivery of the project including acting as the technical expert by interpreting the specifications to the project staff and assisting the staff with any questions related to the technology, equipment and design requirements.

    Financial

    • A project budget is created by the financial team of an organization, and the project manager administers the project budget by ensuring timely and accurate invoicing and monitoring receivables. This includes tracking and reporting staff hours and expenses, finding areas to decrease expenses and analyzing project profitability, revenue and bill rates.

    Internal and External Customer Service

    • This occupation services as the project spokesperson by developing relationships and facilitating communication, updates and meetings with internal and external customers. This includes finding additional sales opportunities, suggesting areas for improvement and ensuring profitability for the organization.
