Screenwriting Enjoyment
When I started writing my first screenplay about a high school running back who 10 years after an injury that ended his career, is reminded of what could have been, I remember moments during the creative process that I found rather enjoyable. There was something about the creative process of coming up with a good story and good dialogue that was both challenging and inspiring at the same time. The process is what I love the most about trying to write a great screenplay.
I did get writers block and I did not write an outline before starting to write. I let the story flow and over time the story started to write itself in parts. I found that the most difficult part to complete was an effective and emotional ending to this story about a great athlete who never got to achieve his true potential in either College or the NFL because of the jealousy of an opposing player who purposely tried to end his career by causing him a career ending injury. What I did about the writers block was to put the story aside, hoping that inspiration would come to me automatically when I wasn't working on this project. This tactic worked for the most part, but not all the time. What you find when you write a few screenplays is that there can be no end to new ideas, or new directions that you can take the story, but eventually you have to finish the project and move onto something new. So far my first screenplay is the best idea I have come up with and since I completed this very emotional story, I have written two more screenplays, the third still needs more work.
I remember Spike Lee saying on CNBC some months ago that you are still an artist and just because your work is not on Broadway or not being made into a movie does not mean that you are not an artist. Spike's words were highly significant in a world where getting your work even read by an agent seems close to impossible.
I plan to continue to write more screenplays and eventually complete my book, about my completed IT career. Now its about the process of writing and learning as much as I can about this very challenging new career. I have always heard from so many other contacts - just keep writing.
